jeez... i wasn't really trying to start that
under/over/sideways/down-ground
argument--i was stating a fact, and wrapping w/a *joke*.

 but to respond:

yes, i do sometimes miss out on good popular music. i was at least a year
behind everyone else on d'angelo & maxwell when they broke. i only checked
them out because of people whose musical tastes i respect said they were
dope
--some on this very list! that's one of the values of this list for me--us
wanna-be snobs get kicked in the butt about some people that are really
 popular, yet *good*!!

i'll eventually listen to the lauryn hill when either:

 a. i can do it leisurely
 b. the hype dies down
 c. someone plays it for me

knowing myself, it will more likely be *b* or *c*.

on the beasties tip, i really haven't liked what i've heard--but then again
i liked very little of what they did until "check your head". i think that
what they've done is get back to more of their original sound (i.e. raucous
party music) which is probably great if you liked them when they first came
 out--but i never did...

in conclusion, it's ironic the way i deal w/listening to pop music--i.e.,
waiting for someone else to tell me it's dope--as that mentality is what i'm

always bitching about in regards to the mainstream listeners checking out
non-mainstream stuff. my excuse is probably the same as theirs--there's so
much crap out there that i use other people as my filter.
