Zoo Yawkers: The Sinners Sideshow

The conclusion of my CMJ weekend ?

Friday:
I went to the Vortex party at Wetlands
by Soundlab, Tygyr Records, & Caipirinha
( no Cormac, no one has learned to pronounce that ).

There were live PAs by:
Byzar

Somatic
( I could have sworn that the Asian guy
was in Soundlab’s Kee ... dunno. )

Sum

Dub Tribe ( wooo ... )

Organization Re-Information
( Really freaky three-piece unit in jumpsuits,
with taped-up Revenge of the Nerd glasses,
maniacally hacking out on computer keyboards
to play this sped-up happy hardcore. Odd. )

Plus DJ Gavin Newman.

Saturday:
I spent the early part of the afternoon with
Deryck Lee and his friend from down South
eyeballing the French collection at the uptown Guggenheim.

There was this incredible mural by Roberto Matta,
titled something like Xpace and the Ego,
painted in the 1940s.

Comprised of stick figures with Venus fly traps
for mouths and genitals in alternating states
of ecstasy and torment.

Afterwards, I went to the Brooklyn Museum of Art
for the first Saturday of every month series.

( I do believe that BMA will replace P.S. 1 in my heart
for Saturday afternoon and evening residency. )

There were performances by Quinbombo,
a jazz ensemble that played Afro-Cuban rhythms.

And the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus ( yay ! )
with music group Fresh Fish.

And a screening of ‘The Clowns’ by Federico Fellini.

And, last, the Mambophonic Juice Jam with Coati Mundi,
formerly Kid Creole, founder of Kid Creole and the Coconuts.

Wow.

Please scan the contents of the email
for further details about the next first Saturday,
December 5th, and performance details.

Afterwards, I headed on over to the Knitting Factory
for MUTINY’s one year anniversary with special guest
Talvin Singh ( yay ! ) live on tablas and electronics.

Talvin was accompanied by drummer Karsh Kale ( sp ? ),
classical vocalist Vishal Bakshim ( sp ? ),
MC Adju Nadhu ( sp ? ) - who had this weird dance sequence
with a monkey mask on, setting off tiny firecrackers in each hand.

DJ Rekha opened for Talvin.
DJ Siraiki ( I think ) closed the show.

Talvin was spinning for an hour after his live set.

I had much fun watching the turban-wrapped Sikhs boogie down.

I did nothing of CMJ-related interest yesterday,
but I had fun at a Chinese church service with grandparents
at Riverside Church last Sunday evening.

Old lavender ppl nodding off to an old pink minister.
I picked up nine cassette tapes of sermons by
Chinese ministers from all over world.

My grandparents were overjoyed when they saw my interest.

Little do they know of my plans.
I want to sample them into jungle beats.
Hoping that God ( or someone/thing ) will forgive me.

Onto business ...

come to a video screening, discussion and planning meeting
on the campaign to
S H U T D O W N
The School of the Americas

Tuesday, November 10th 1998, starting @ 7 pm
ABC No Rio, 156 Rivington St.,
2 blocks south of Houston St.

This event is free,
and was put together by collective members
of ABC No Rio.

Call 212 254 3697 for event info and subway directions.

The US Army School of the Americas has trained
60,000 Latin American soldiers in combat skills,
commando tactics, military intelligence, and torture techniques.

Hundreds of thousands of Latin Americans have been
tortured, raped, assassinated, "disappeared," massacred,
and forced into refuge by graduates of this "School of Assassins."
SOA graduates target educators, the poor, and those who work
for the rights of the poor.

In November, thousands of ppl will gather at Ft. Benning’s
main gate to say NO ! to the SOA. On November 22nd,
1,000 will "cross the line" into Ft. Benning in a solemn
funeral procession. With this act of civil disobedience,
the 1,000 will risk arrest to honor and speak for
our sisters and brothers who have been SOA victims.
Both those who remain at the vigil site and those
who cross the line will be one in calling our leaders
to close down the School of Assassins.

We will show ...
"Father Roy: Inside the School of Assassins ( 60 minutes )"
"School of the Americas: An Insider Speaks (18 minutes)"

a place called CHIAPAS:
Eight Months Inside the Zapatista Uprising.
A 90 minute feature documentary.

At
Film Forum
209 West Houston St., NY.

November 4th to 17th, 1998.
Box office: 212 727 8110.

On January 1st, 1994, the indigenous Zapatista National
Liberation Army took over 5 towns and 500 ranches
in southern Mexico. Then they started sending their msg
to the world on the Internet. The Mayan Indians of Chiapas
were in cyberspace. The NY Times has called the Zapatista
uprising the world’s first post modern revolution.

Now in Chiapas there is a nervous ceasefire.
Nettie Wild travelled to the jungle canyons of southern Mexico
to film the elusive and fragile life of an uprising.
Her camera ended up framing the entrapment of a revolution.
In "A Place Called Chiapas," nothing is as it first appears.
