I don't have a CD recorder, but I've been looking at the latest breed
out there. My advice is to never get first-generation machines, so
maybe hold out for a little while. On the other hand, if you want to
take the leap, check out the new Philips dual-tray CD recorder. I
forget the model number, but I saw it in an ad for Circuit City for
$600(watch the price fall in a year). Looks like a good deck, but the
blank CDs, which are designated as AUDIO CDs, are $6 a pop and are
tough to find unless you shop online. Don't try to use the computer
CD-Rs, as they won't work in the Philips deck. My guess is that they
want to use the AUDIO-only CDs to tax the consumer for copyrights.
BTW, they probably have the SCMS copycode system on it, so forget
about multiple copies unless you go to a pressing facility. Sounds
like a pain, huh?
I've used minidiscs for 4 1/2 years, and they are a great way to
record without the hassle of tapes. The prices have fallen nicely, and
I just got a second deck, the Sony MDS-JB920. It's full of great
features, and the sound is neck & neck with CDs. You can get MD blanks
for as low as 2.50 apiece if you know where to look. Sorry if I went
on for a while, I'm just trying to help. Good luck.
