my buddy just got the marantz stand-alone (i.e., non-computer) cd burner.
it was $1k, and works w/both cheap cdrs (i.e., the $2 cd/cd-rom type) and
rewritable cds. it's very simple to use (almost as easy as a tape deck) and

has both analog (xlr--in only--*and* rca) & digital (spdif--rca--& adat
--lightpipe) i/o. stand-alone cdrs have been on the market for a while, so
i don't think you need to wait for the next generation for something usable.
the audio-only cds do have the serial copy protection i believe--no digital
duplicates are possible (analog copies should probably work, though). audio
-only cds cannot be used as a glass master (for duplication) whereas regular

cdrs can. as far as home duplication, you can use your existing cd player
--you *do* own one, don't you?--check to see if it has a digital output,
many
consumer models now do. if it doesn't, you can still use the analog input
of
the recorder, you'll just have to set levels.
