I am definitely in agreement with all that has been said. Not only is Fela's
music dope, but his political vision and actions were heroic and courageous.
Some recommended recent related releases (on wax):
(shit, if I had em here I would give u the labels)
- He Miss Road (a UK re-release of an old record of his)
- AfroFunk - a new comp on Harmless Records - EXCELLENT - has 1 Fela song
lots of other gems.
- Femi Kuti - Bang Bang (or is it Beng Beng). A housey single with lots of
remixes, off of his new album. From France. Femi Kuti is fela's son.
- Tony Allen - Ariya
Last Wednesday nite, at Dance Ritual, I was lucky enough to hear Jo Clausell
rip it up with the Femi Kuti record, which he then mixed into Expensive Shit
(by Fela) and weaved it together with an acapella of Upside Down.
It was off the hook - a 3 turntable mix of Fela's music, on what is possibly
the LOUDEST sound system in NYC.
