Hello,

The story about the VW ads is kind of funny.
We worked on the VW spots at my company, which while they look
very simple where actually a huge pain in the ass, making the white space
actually white, luckily I was on other projects and didn't have to deal
with it.

Anyway, more to the point, the art director basically looked through his
CD collection and picked songs he liked and they bought rights and used them.

I dont remember exactly what songs they where but the bands are:

the Orb for UFO
Stereolab for Flower
Negitiveland for Dream ( they (the band) got into trouble for sampling
                                Rickie Lee Jones))
Spiritualized was used on a spot as well but I don't remember which.

Thing about TV ads is that more and more people who listen to good music
are creating the spots hence the increase in good music on TV, likewise
the Audio post houses are getting "hipper" as well, which aside from the
pure capitalism of it, allows for better design to get aired, which is
good for those people who are designers and those who appreciate it.

Don't know anything about those Banana Republic ads but the DP
(director of Photography) did a great job.
