Hey list, what's shakin'. I picked up the new Elvis Costello collaboration with Burt Bacharach last Tuesday, and I gotta say, it's looking like it's gonna be my album of the year. No kidding!!!!! Fans of both these geniuses will be thrilled with this record, especially Elvis fans, as while Bacharach's compositions are up to their always high standards, Elvis has never sounded so good. As a longtime fan, I'd probably say that this is his best record to date and definitely his most passionate.
This record's been on very heavy rotation (3-6 times daily) for the last 10 days, and I find myself humming the tunes when it's not playing, and that hasn't happened in way too long. Pure musical genius is a fitting description for the magic that's going on on this disc, at least for fans of either of these artists. I know it's not acid-jazz per se, but I figured that since lounge and 70's composers get discussed here, some of y'all need to have this record.
For those familiar with Costello's collaboration with the Brodsky Quartet or his work with Bill Frisell, this one beats those two in terms of songwriting, vocal delivery and overall passion. Burt's just being Burt (modern day genius in my mind), but Elvis........ I didn't know he had it in him to THAT level. Thought you might like to know.
