I just woke up from a night in The Hague where the Crossing Border festival
is taking place. Last night: Red Snapper, dissappopinting because of the bad
sound..4 Hero, with a small violin orchestra (where was the 21-piece
orchestra??). They did a (too) short performance but of good quality. Most
of the public wasn't in the mood for laid back music however and got a
little bored. Gilles Peterson had warmed up the public before that with some
big tunes ( I think what I heard is the new London Elektricity, basss).
After that Mc Dynamite & Dj Die took the stage for some serious D&B. I left
the main hall at that time and walked into some other smaller halls where
poets and standup comedians were doing performances for small audiences.
That way I ended up in a room where I heard the announcement "please
welcome the bassplayer of Gil Scott-Heron with Frank Messina, spoken word
artist. A bassplayer and a poet, nice combo! very intimate session with some
good and lively poetry and FAT bass solos!

I spent 5 minutes watching Faithless, which I wasn't in the mood for after
hearing the combo (the public was going nutters so I think they put down a
solid show) and went to see Don Byron and existential Dred who were
performing for about 20 people. This was f*cking exiting! and the main event
for me that evening. This was some serious souljazzfunkpoetry! I heard some
of it on the cd but you can't compare it to a live session of them, whoohaa!
an hour after the concert my ears where still hearing the music... what a
rush...exactly the thing I had came for. My friend Egbert (an existential
dred himself :) who had joined me was completely trippin'...and we have been
molesting the people we were sharing the car with that concert. How could
they have missed it! GO check them..

okay, this night: Black Star, Rahzel (the roots), Lester Bowie, Underworld,
Mark Lannegan and lots of things you'll just have to wander into..

btw I noticed something in the last edition of Chaser magazine (did you see
the fly t-shirts?) where is the Ben Wilcox section, the 12" reviews!

groovin at home with Count Basie Jam,
cheers
Jeroen
