Just came back to Holland from a 3-day trip to the music capital with two
compadres; Newynn and Léon.
Here's a little report:

Mondaymorning was spent in Honest John's where the lovely Leanne Wright gave
us an excellent trip through the sound of London of today (thanks Leanne,
you're the sweetest thing in London!, She shares a show on Kiss fm with
Patrick Forge, Kirk D. G. and others) and didn't grew tired of us even
after listening to
record # 300 :)

Newyn, an Indian-hindu from Surinam was on a mission to discover what the
Asian underground scene in London was like and had a blast as he could buy
loads of good music there (check the Outcaste compilation and the new Talvin
Singh). He also picked up a set of tablas in an obscure shop at the asian
block near Liverpool Street.

We spent the night at Bar Rumba, which was crowded with 16-year olds
boogying to Gilles' excellent set, Léon kept going to the booth every 5
minutes to ask what it was. (he played the new Adam F, UFO and a lot of
unknown stuff.. whew!). Newyn and I moved to club The End later that evening
(after being walking for an hour or such thanks to some English wankers who
pointed us in the wrong direction and witnessing a horrible car-accident)
where Talvin Singh was doing the Anokha night. We talked to the man a little
as Newyn
wanted to sell him some of his artwork (fucked-up asian style graphics,
maybe he'll do the next cover for my compilation!) and he is a nice fella.

I bought a load of records (of course) and a lot of people were very
helpful. Big love goes out to the people at Soul Jazz (thanks for the soul
jazz reggae promos! very fat!) and Atlas Records (I finally found a good
new recordbag there) who were very patient with us unknowing dutchies (the
guy behind the counter was definitely doing speed! he moved like a tornado).
Look out for a 10" by
Chris Energy (yeah the name is awful, white label), a 12" by MAW which is a
remix of Manu Dibango's New Bill and a remix of Herbie Mann's Hijack
(white). The Nu Yorican Soul mix of Kenny Latimore's Days like this is a
beauty and so is the new London Elektricity "Pull the Plug" (Hospital).
Check out Latinaire by Beatless (Ubiquity!), Clara Moreno - When you gonna
learn - Ashley beedle mixes (Avex?), The new Azymuth LP, Woodland Warrior is
fat (if you like Banda Black Rio, you'll like this..btw brazilian records
are way too expensive at Mr. Bongo..45 pounds for Maria Fumaça by BBR! and
40 quid for an Edu Lobo album is ridiculous). The new Bah Samba 12" ep -
unreleased dubs (estereo) is excellent as well.

Things that I had already heard/ borrowed but still had to pick up on vinyl:
ATCQ-the love moment, the uk pressing is about 1/2 the price...
an old record by Ile Aye, spiritual brazilian music, very deep and
easytempo, Samba de Rua by Grupo Batuque (Far Out), Jujus Alchemy of the
Blues lp (finally found it on vinyl), Message from the Tribe (Soul Jazz) and
the Suspicious album by Outside (at last).

Release the Groove is a great shop and the guys of Amalgation of Sounds have
a good taste and their knowledge of music is huge, they fed us with some
good old funky music by Pharoah Sanders (containing a UFO song..) and
obscure jazz records (btw
they're busy with something new which according to them will be massive).
they gave the email adres of their mailing list which I'll pass on to the
list as soon as I find it in one of my trousers..

some final remarks..people are way too stressed in London (especially those
in the music biz), bike-couriers are truly suicidal to work there and don't
eat more than 2 kebabs at one night!

cheers and goodnight
Jeroen
