The Impressario, Plan 9 & T-Bird present Way Out West--eclectic-ism for the
dancefloor. The resident DJs have a boundary-breaking style of selection
that
is refreshing in Los Angeles where genre-segregated clubs are the norm.
Underground, or non-commercial radio in Los Angeles (e.g., KCRW 89.9FM,
KPFK 90.7FM, KXLU 88.9FM, etc.) is known for being eclectic and adventurous
with its music programming. One can hear any number of obscure or cutting
edge genres on these stations--sometimes during the same show.
Unfortunately,
this eclectic tendency hasn't crossed over to most dance clubs; very few
clubs
play more than one or two genres during the course of the night. At Way Out
West variety will be the order of the day, addressing this problem and
creating a well-blended experience.

The foundation was laid with their previous venture, Jazzid Up!, the only
club
of its kind on the west side of Los Angeles. Jazzid Up! was the acid-jazz
club that allowed The Impressario and resident DJs Plan 9, Junior Roach &
T-Bird to experiment with dance club conventions. The regular supporters
were
treated to a variety of great music by the resident DJs, guest DJs and bands.

Performances have included DJ Nickodemus bringing the New York flavor of
legendary acid-jazz club Giant Step, the "Stoned, Chilled Groove" trip-hop
mix
of Bud Brothers Freddie Be & Mick Cole, Mark Farmer of Los Angeles' own KBLT
radio and 45 Vibe (an antecedent club for Jazzid Up!) spinning a
history-aware
yet forward-looking set of rare-groove and electronica. Live bands such as
Five Degrees of Soul with their latin-tinged funk & jazz, The Congregation
playing their alterna-soul, and the breakbeat jazz-funk of Long Beach's
00 Soul performed at Jazzid Up! during its two-year run.

Way Out West changes direction from performance-oriented to vibe-oriented.
This time out, the music will be provided strictly by DJs, allowing more
continuity in the experience, and full submersion in the vibe. The venue
will
be Lounge 217 in Santa Monica, a room that is practically a physical
manifestation of the music. There are disparate elements in the room
--luxurious seating, almost bare concrete walls, wooden partitions and metal
sculptures--yet there is a cohesiveness and flow to the space. By combining
the music with the venue, the vibe has been completed.

Take a trip to somewhere that's never existed before--truly eclectic music,
played in a fresh new way, in a great room--Way Out West on Sunday, November
15 9pm-2am (and every Sunday thereafter) at Lounge 217 (217 Broadway in Santa

Monica). Passengers Wanted.

Call 310.236.0141 for guest list or more information.

... THINK! it ain't illegal, yet...-p-funk
