I recently picked up Grooverider's "Mysteries of Funk" and JazKlash's
"Thru The Haze." Grooverider's was cool, it's full-sepctrum Drum & Bass,
going back & forth between funky, jazzy, ambient and hardcore. I think
more drum n bass artists should try doing something like that..having an
album all one style gets boring quickly. The Jaz Klash's album was
alright, it didn't strike me that much, it's nice to listen to in the
background. Mostly on the jazzy and ambient side.
On the Acid Jazz side, I picked up Innershade's "Four Corners." For
those who don't know, Innershade is Incognito going incognito,
literraly. Actually, it's more like "Incognito & Friends," with all
their friends and guest players in addition to the regular Cog lineup.
Bluey's son Daniel Maunick does the breakbeat programming on the drum n
bass numbers. Freddie Hubbard's "Little Sunflower" gets the dnb
treatment, it's done nice, though it sounds more jazz then dnb. On the
whole, it sounds more interesting that the real Incognito's upcoming
album, except for two nearly embarassingly derivative numbers (the title
track steals blindly from "I Am The Black Gold of the Sun" and one song
sounds just like Bobby Caldwel's "What You Won't Do For Love." A must
for any Incognito fan.
