I guess us old-timers should impart some 'wisdom';)
I have to say its a good eclectic mix, very acid-jazz-ish (i.e. rather
undefinable.) for DJ Food stuff, check out some other label mates
(http://www.ninjatune.net) such as Coldcut (DJ Food is just the collective
of Ninja Tune), DJ Vadim maybe a bit to abstrack, or repetitive as I find
him. Others would be DJ Cam (http://www.sonymusic.fr/djcam), some DJ
Krush, La Funk Mob, (both http://www.mowax.com) but, even then Food has a
rather distinctive sound. Also you should check out DJ Shadow for truly
different sampled sound (http://www.entroducing.com).
T-Power, on the drum'n'bass tip, has a quite varried range in himself,
ranging from Jungle to more melodic stuff. Check out the Artcore series,
that has some of his tracks for the more melodic stuff, others would be LTJ
Bukem (on Looking Good Records) his Earth compilations, and the first
Logical Progressions are good, 4 hero, maybe Amon Tobin of Ninja Tune too.
For the Jungle side I like the "Law Of The Jungle" comp on Moonshine
(http://www.moonshine.com), also the Lee "Scratch" Perry & Mad Professor
"Supa Ape Inna Jungle" is also good wacky Jungle fun, along with the more
Jump-up stuff like Aphrodite puts out.
Howie B I have mostly encountered as producer (see Sly & Robbie's "Stripped
to the bone" (http://www.palmpictures.com) and remixer but, I would loot
for David Holmes' "lets get killed" album--great spy grooves, also look for
the Pussyfoot (http://www.pussyfoot.co.uk) stuff (Howie's label) especially
"Pussy Galore" some great spy grooves, also United Future Orginization's
"3rd Perspective" (http://www.verveinteractive.com) has the groove too.
As for Portishead there really is no substitue, but for a sense of where
their coming from, check out their neighbors in Bristol: Massive Attack
(http:/www.massiveattack.com),
Tricky(http://www.island.co.uk/cat/retrieve.cgi?tricky), Alpha
(http://www.raft.vmg.co.uk/alpha.html), Roni Size/ Reprasent
(http://www.mercuryrecords.com/mercury), Purple Penguin
(http://www.cupoftearecords.co.uk/). For the more Portishead like sound
(one of the Trip-Hop flavors) Mono
(http://www.echo.co.uk/HTMLpages/MONO/monot/home.htm), early Morecheeba
(http://www.discoveryrec.com), also look for Lamb
(http://www.mercuryrecords.com/mercury/artists/lamb/lamb_homepage.html) a
bit different but just as good. For real background in P check out all the
old John Barry and Lalo Schifrin soundtracks: Mission Impossible, Enter The
Dragon, The Ipcress File, James Bond ochestral stuff, among others.

But, just keep listening. Best is go for many comps, try the "Rebirth of
Cool" (http://www.island.com), the Mo'Wax (http://www.mowax.com) "Headz"
are seminal, "Future Sounds of Jazz" (http://www.compost-records.com), and
most any K7 (http://www.studio-k7-com) mix albums for the feel of a certian
artist: i.e. Hip-hop from DJ Cam, Downtempo from Kruder & Dorfmeister,
electro, techno from Andrea Parker, soul and drum'n'bass from Nicolette,
hardstep drum'n'bass from Kemistry & Storm, dub, reggee, and soul from
Smith & Mighty. And, lastly for a background in much of the music sampled
and emulated get the jazz compilations: "blue break beats" on Blue Note
(http://www.bluenote.com), "Talkin Verve" on Verve/Talkin' Loud
(http:/www.talkinloud.com

And, lastly for more links, the Headz list is one of the best
(http://www.personal.u-net.com/~wheldrake/headz/), along with our own
AcidJazz links (http://www.cmd.uu.se/AcidJazz/).

Just remember to keep looking, see what they like that you like and try out
other stuff they suggest, as I did. I like the groups you mentioned so
much of my passle of links are colored by my own preferences.
