Hey, it's Jay Brancazio, I'm still sort of around, thanks to the archives,
living in San Francisco now, if anyone wants to contact me send mail to
jaybranc@alumni.princeton.edu

I saw the post about the comp. CD, now the comp. MP3 site, and I think it's
a great idea

I thought it may be helpful to give everyone my little summary of what went
down back then - I first solicited votes to see whether or not the group of
people involved wanted a "producer" to produce the CD and decide on tracks
or if they wanted to produce it democratically - the overwhelming response
(something like 16 to 1 with 8 people not voting out of the 25 interested
musicians) was to do it democratically

People then sent me their music, which was really fun to listen to and
compile. I compiled all the tracks and got graphics from Jeremy and put
them on tapes which I then duplicated and sent out to the musicians. The
musicians then decided on their favorite tracks and I created a list of the
top vote getters.

The comment about the cost-prohibitive nature was right on - one by one the
people voted to have made the best music started to drop out of the project,
and so I sent more emails around to the remaining group members to decide on
what we should do, and I think we all just let it fizzle, considering the
unavailability of any recognized marketing channel or distribution.

I was, however, pleased with how far we got with the project - for me there
were two ends to serve, one of which was served very well, one of which is
still unserved.

The first end to serve was to let all the musicians on the list hear what
each other musician on the list was up to, which they were able to once I
sent them the tapes. I think that spurred a bit of discussion amongst
various listmembers and led to some fruitful collaborations.

The unrealized aim, however, which really was and still is the genesis of
the whole project, was to let all the members of the list, as well as the
world at large, hear what the musicians on the list are up to. There was a
discussion of creating a web site when the project fizzled, but that was
pre-MP3....now seems like a really great time to do this.

My biggest piece of advice: Keep the comp-related traffic off the acid-jazz
list - people got pissed off and were not afraid let me know this.
Thankfully nobody threatened to stomp a mud-hole in my ass.
