hehe. quite appropriately i've got three copies of that tune ;) it's on the
b-side of chipmunk; the kungfungfusion ninja comp, and on the scruff album
which is wicked.
a few bits & pieces i picked up recently:
different worlds ep (83 west records)
4 tracks from matos, sheen, kerri chandler, & jon cutler. the matos track is
nice - sampling the sax and guitar hooks from ronnie laws' let's keep it
together. the other tracks are pretty average us house fodder
cookin ep (good looking/cookin)
interesting double 12" sees drum'n'bass producers turning their skills to
slower tempos. artemis's "b3" is a wicked jazz fusion cut - tight drum
programming with hammond and moog noodles. kaleidoscope's "the bite" is a
more downtempo affair, sampling a very familiar rhodes hook - pretty sure
it's herbie hancock's "sly". moodchild's "greensand" is just gorgeous with
dubby analogue lines arpeggiating over a reverb soaked background of
strings, sub bass and a programmed break. if you liked global comms 76:14
(and face it: how could you not?) you'll like this.
professor tsungs' art of science funktion (moving shadow)
in a similar vein to the above, the moving shadow d'n'b crew have a go at
something a little more experimental - though with varying success. The
contributions from Aquasky and Flytronix make this a worthwhile purchase,
the former mixing double-bass, sinister rhodes chords and rock solid breaks
to devastating effect. Flytronix's dark and mysterious "Smokeringz" seems to
work well on both 33 and 45. At 45 it sounds like Bitches Brew on speed,
while at 33 those trumpets sound like those god awful horns on that film
Altered States. Add horrorshow strings and a creepy shuffling break and you
get something pretty magical.
dj icey - beats & tracks 8 (ebc)
typical icey breaks - heavy on the electro influence. from the minimal
structure of the tracks, i'm guessing that they're intended as dj tools
rather than full tracks. "Ease the beat" is the only standout track -
combining an electro break, a bubbling 303, and loads of familiar oldskool
samples...
141st street orchestra - raw booty (dust2dust)
hip-house meets dodgy 80's p-funk. gets a good reaction on dance floor
though.
nightmare's on wax - finer #2 (warp)
i was a bit disappointed by car boot soul, but here they deliver. all three
tracks rock. paul nice's mix of finer takes a solid downtempo break, colours
it with touches of latin percussion and tight scratches, leaving plenty of
space for sara winton's phased and dubbed up vocals. following a nice hiphop
cut on the b-side is "play on". downtempo breaks, a couple of sax riffs and
corrina joseph's jazzy vocal scats. i've developed a real weak spot for
corrina joseph's voice since that opening track on totally wired (11?). i'd
love to hear what else she's done, because her voice is the sweetest.
cricco castelli - life is changing again (kult)
this has eluded me for ages but i've finally got a copy. the original "life
is changing" has been in the bag since it's release, and this is a worthy
follow up. pretty much a different track altogether rather than a remix. it
does use some similar ideas - taking a rhodes solo, cut-looping it over the
breakdowns then letting it flow. this version adds new elements - horns and
guitar plus a tighter production. though i don't know if it'll replace the
original in my bag.
m-dubs - over here (babyshack)
roodz has been bigging up this guy for a while now. quite pathetically, this
is the only m-dubs production i've managed to get my hands on. but i like
it... forget the other mixes and head straight for the sugar shack break
beat funk mix. funky two-step break with organ stabs and badass vocals.
nice.
jazz in the house 7 (slip n slide / kickin)
a big latin vibe going on through all these tracks. so if you're a fan of
jazzanova you'd be well advised to check this. loads of chunky percussion,
flutes, saxes, violin solo's even. victor davies' "brother" is just
beautiful. subtitled "the sound of summer" pretty much sums it up.
baby mammoth - chin chiefly / chocolate elvis dub
haven't really formed an opinion on this... probably because i still haven't
worked out whether it's 33 or 45. anyway some nice ideas but they don't seem
to gel for me.
gramme - pre-release (output)
bought on andy crowther's recommendation, so was expecting to hear something
soulful, jazzy & funky. so when i put the first track on i was a bit gutted
to be assulted with poorly produced experimental rock. the words "wind up"
even sprang to mind! but after the first track, things get a little better
and i can definately hear the clash influence. though i can't help wondering
if andy crowther's the next john peel? ;)
and on the jungle tip...
unknown vs adina howard (white)
pretty sure this is a hype production. mixes r'n'b style vocals, fierce
jump-up-breaks and the bass line from sl2.
unknown - sunshine/gritty city (white)
rockin jump-up jungle in a congo natty style with first class rapping
uti - good thing/proceed (influential)
good thing uses a james brown vocal hook with a fat bassline and rap
samples. nice.
right... train to catch. more to come soon.
