I have mixed feelings about this one. No doubt the Jaxx are very
talented, as any number of previous releases on their Atlantic
Jaxx label can testify. But the new album strikes me as a bit
calculated, trying to rope in the "rock" audience. I'll admit an
anti-rock bias on my part (been there, done that), but on my first
couple of listens I felt the album was a bit too "un-subtle" to
have a lasting impact. Having said that, "Red Alert" is no doubt
the "Music Sounds Better" of 1999. And I'd recommend picking up
the domestic CD single of that track, with several good mixes and
a wicked non-LP track, "Razocaine."
