That's precisely what inspired me to dj, entering the technics scene via
dub. The meditations on sound that engage your being on a whole nother
level then say, trance or techstep. Open up the subtle energies. In this
day and age of consumer frenetics, downtempo really is a kind of
evangelization. Cooling the mind to alpha mode and giving it focus. (see
http://www.biocybernaut.com/pubs/alpha_is.html, tho the science may be
dubious, who knows?) Don't get me wrong, there's a time and place for
losing one's mind but, at some point, you have to go and find it again.

The soul aspect of AJ is something else though.

A Dario

I wonder if the lack of radio exposure, even
college/independent radio, has to do with idiots like
me who love music but took years to warm up to slower,
sleepier stuff. everything downtempo takes some
patience and subtlety on the part of the listener, and
I certainly lacked that patience for a long time.
Maxinquaye and Dummy were like a frying pan to the
head which is why i took notice and instantly fell in
love, but it has taken a concerted effort, the support
of loved ones, and new ways of listening (not to
mention deeper digging in the wallet to invest in yet
another genre) for little hyperactive me to cozy up to
the likes of what now comprise about 30-50% of my
purchases!

*DUH!!!* My bad. You think a lot of others may
suffer the same affliction, and maybe this has the
cumulative effect of under-exposure and relegation to
mood-building ad and movie backgrounds?? Maybe I
should go on a national speaking tour and try to win
converts. Sing "Amazing Grace" into Radio Shack
microphones at high schools and VFWs and stuff.
