I have followed the Mexican rap/hip-hop scene for more than fifteen years
and I am still to hear anything truly original. There is a lot of good
stuff being made there, but it is hard not to call it 'derivative'.
Control Machete may use a lot of mexican folk music in their samples, but
they still cannot shake the 'Cypress Hill clone' tag off easily.
Similarly, Platilina Mosh sound too goofily similar to Dust Bros. meets
the Beastie Boys. And these are actually the best hip-hop bands in
Mexico. Calo started doing some amazing top thanks to awesome elctro-house
beats provided by Alex Syntek back in the 80s (Alex Syntek is now trying
to do Acid Jazz, but very unsuccesfully).
Talking about 'Empero Norton Records', they are finally making
available in America the second release by what may well be the only
electronic/Acid-Jazz band in Mexico: TITAN. I have seen them live and they
are amazing, but I have never been too impressed by their recordings.
