How like Spin to:

1) Chart Prince Paul, Handsome Boy Modeling School,
Basement Jaxx and Kruder & Dorfmeister in their
"best of 99" chart

2) then tell us that we're not
cool enough (since we "didn't hear") to
have bought The Funky Precedent, Pole,
Bonnie Prince Billy, I-F and the Planet E
comp

3) call '99 the year of the "house music revival"

4) print a couple pictures of Body & Soul,
use the club as the opening hook of the article, and
then talk about Basement Jaxx, Armand Van Helden,
and Everything But The Girl.

The way trends pop up and die off is so disgusting
because they're a complete fabrication by publications
like this. Magazines of this calibre never have
existed to celebrate music or any of the joy it brings,
only to shout about what's currently (and thus definitely
not permanently) cool. I could care less about being
"commercial" vs. being "indie", who cares if Spin is
"commercial", it's irrelevant: it's not about the music.

Like the very nice summary in the Gilles Peterson
"INCredible" CD, "acid jazz" is really a name for
an approach to music, an all-encompassing attitude.
I admire everyone on their list for their love of
the music, and the relative absence of "coolness".
I think the original "acid jazz" movement was very
much about being in style, which is one reason why
it was eventually unsuccessful. This movement is
more open and wide-ranging. Be it Quannum, be it
Fela, be it Claussel..I'm here for the music.
