The one everybody has been mentioning at www.mambox.com is
actually coming out next week I think. Check the website for more
information. There is a second one which is coming out in
February by Pine (something like that) at www.pineusa.com. I'm
sure there will be more hitting the market within the coming months
too.
As far as quality is concerned, as long as you compress a signal
you will always have loss of quality. The high frequencies are more
likely to be lost than low, but future compression techniques could
potentially overcome this slight flaw.
As far as replacing vinyl goes - I will always have my vinyl
collection. But lugging around the collection is always a pain in
the ass and always risks its loss or destruction. There is
soemthing to be said for having a killer selection of vinyl only to
lose it at the airport (DJ Premier this summer) or losing it in a blaze
(Q-Tip). There is a definite potential to replacing vinyl as the
standard DJ medium, but its just a question when a company will
develop the next generation of tools that we need. The N2IT MP3
turntable system is on the right track, but its still not something
dj's "have to have".
