for me, i think Fred Galliano definitely do a same kind of trick, even if his inspirations are away from the guy under cinematic O or Innerzone's Carl craig (if we believe reviews, interviews of the guys).
what he's tryin to do is just the accomplishment of what feelings and perceptions about what music really is (beside just vibrations and sounds). the galliano way includes the pseudo afro patern, a remember of his first love for the continental "deep" african reason of makin music (exchange of informations, of traditions, of social commuciation between people, parents/childs, head of a tribe/family and people...), the guys is really into that, and was another person when he first came back from his first vist to africa...
he's not this kind of "shit, african music is fat", he's more into the "why, how, when, ..." of african rhytmnes and music. now, we're in 1999, and Fred believed too that tomorrow's electronic methods of doing it all will change a lot of things. his "metissage" (french word, don't know the exact term for it in english) is just the touchable result of what is really talkin to him, as "jazz" instead of afro for innerzone... (speakin of innerzone, check out the Francesco mora intvw in straight no chaser magazine, october 99,.... kickin'!!!)

replace "france" instead of "australia" and you'll get the point about me... welcome on the world wide web!

probably not as much as promotion and labels woudl like to. just check out the press/media coverage (it's done -and paid- by the label, we're ok), and just look how many followings to so-called "big new stuff"? not that much. "our" music isn't the best selling one, but majors begins to believe that one cd sold is some money more, and if they're so many indy labels, it's because there's probably people who want hear something else.
it could be true, but i think they thinked too much about "it's-done-so-it's-sells" instead of "it's-done-cause-people-just-wanted-to-have-fun-and-did-it"...
examples? 4 years ago, french hip hop wasn't 2% of the french major productions (on a french language level). many indy labels cames out, and they sold what they can (not that much, but echoes were here). now majors comes in, sayin "hey, we'll give you what you expect from french music (read: we'll grab your money, lettin' you thinking that we'll do the promo and everyting without taking all the cash)".
and after that, they saw that 2 years after, only 20% of the indie and artists they signed gave them money.
result? back to indie... artists go back to underground and independant, but they know how it works, so they try to do the job by themselves, with what they(ve got.
sometimes it works (big promotion, good distribution, fat echoes, see Rawkus ny label), sometimes, no.
we'll see. innerzone orchestra didn"t work that much in europe, including uk, told me one of my friends working in a distribution company. is he right? people?
