Part of it is the 20-years-retro thing...A lot of '90s music was inspired by (or
just straightforwardly sampled) '70s music, and thus what came out of the studio
reflected that.. Vocals too...

Likewise the 80s was influenced by the 60s, where quite a bit of the music used
echo chambers and reverb plates and springs. It's also expected that the next
decade react against the previous, so in a couple more years you'll hear the big
reverby sound again (I notice some jungle is starting to get that way...I betcha
a million dollars that some drum n bass tracks will be using Simmons drums (tew!
tew! dooo!) and/or the Linn Drum machine :))
