Shuggie Otis was the son of Johnny Otis, a legendary swing/jump blues
bandleader. Growing up in that environment, its no surprise that
Shuggie was practically a child progidy, and one of his earliest dates
(I believe) is this monster record by Preston Love (another member of
Johnny Otis' band) called "Omaha BBQ." One of thee fuckin' sickest
instrumental funk records of all time, on the Kent record label.
Shuggie was 15 and has the ill guitar licks.
A few years later he got signed to Epic and released four albums on
the label. Not easy to track down but a few have been reissued on
vinyl, and I think there is a best of CD somewhere. He wrote the
original version of "Strawberry Letter 23" that was a hit for the
Brothers Johnson. (his version is the shit!)
The he seems to have disappeared, though I think he's still alive.
Reasons are pretty ambiguous about why he stopped recording, one could
assume illicit ativities.
All his stuff is worth checkin'.
