more songs about mixing...

i'm surprised that none of the djs on the list has
weighed in on this one (or at least no-one's identified
themself as a dj).

the big difference between live club mixing & mix
cds/tapes is this: at the club, flubs are forgivable as
long as they don't interrupt the dancing, whereas when
you record a set, *all* the flubs stick out!! a tape/cd
is scrutinized a *lot* more than a live set. there's
stuff i'll just go for during a live set that i would be
too self-conscious to try on tape--really, i just get
tired of having to re-do the tape because one of the
scratches came out *noticeably* less-than-perfect.

the other thing is that when you're playing live, you
have a crowd to feed off and help your direction. when
you're playing on tape, there needs to be a plan to the
set so that the energy goes somewhere, or else it sounds
like someone just throwing on tunes...

in response to the question about my style development
vs. my self-confidence, i was always an on-the-job-
training kinda guy!! i'm amazed that i was able to keep
my job djing while i was learning to beat-mix--i
practised on-the-air!! as i've gotten better overall,
my judgement has usually been good about when to try new
tricks, etc. out on the crowd--but every once in a while
i go too far... that's when the experience kicks in and
you know to get more straight-forward, before you
completely lose the crowd.
