Some great tunes this week:
Soul Ascendants - "Variations" LP (Nuphonic - UK)
Very classy LP. A lush blend of afrobeat, latin, jazz and house influences.
There's a live feel on most tracks with some lovely horn arrangements.
Mr Scruff - "Keep it Unreal" LP (Ninja Tune - UK)
A true lesson in the use of sampling and some delicious beats.
V/A - "The New Latinaires" LP (Ubiquity - US)
The Jazzanova contributions are excellent as are the 60's originals included
on the second plate. The other tracks are interesting (especially the Carl
Craig track) but lack the balls to rock the dancefloor.
Sunshine Funk - "Lemon" 12" (Sunshine Groove - France)
Totally funky. Excellent use of cut up vocals and filtered disco riffs.
DJ On - "Funky Affair" EP (Pigs Life - France)
Tuffer version of Daddy's Favourite with helium vocals.
Trouble Men - "Trouble Men" LP (KIF - France)
More loopy refried disco. The first disc relies on the disco loops a bit
heavily and gets rather repetitive. But the second disc is a lot stronger. I
love the timbales on Body & Soul.
Deaf'n Dumb Crew "Flagrant Delit" EP (Black Jack - France)
This puts a real smile on your face and works well on the funkier
dancefloor. The vocal loop on "Tonite" is wicked; "Chicayork" uses a furious
sax sample. A bit cheezy but loadsa fun.
Alex Gopher - "Party People" EP (Solid - France)
Alex Gopher - "The Child" 12" (Solid - France)
Strong P-Funk vibe on "Party People". "The Child" (Original Mix) is a
chilled out groover with Billie Holiday vocals and funky poppin' bass. Not
too fond of the remixes though.
Alex Kid - "Soul College" EP (F Communications - France
Lush jazz/house fusion with nice keys and guitar improvisation.
Joff Roach - "My Mind/To the Beat Y'all" 12" (White label)
I'm not into the vocal on "My Mind", but the flipside is wicked. This kicks
deep so watch those subs!
Joff Roach - "Divine Scams" EP (Smoke Free - Netherlands)
Bought this for "Moco Jawa" on the b-side. Funky synths... nice bass.
Minimal House - "Turn it to the House - Futureshock Mix" 12" (Cleveland
City)
Quite hard this one. The sustained rhodes effect is so intense it somehow
gets into your head and messes you up without your knowing - but in a very
pleasant way.
Kevin Yost - "If she only know" (I! Records)
Not really into the 'disco' mix but the deeper sounds on the flipside are
nice. Laidback soulful vibes. Great keys.
Mateo & Matos - "Release the Rhythm" 12" (Glasgow Underground)
Mateo & Matos - "Just a Dab" 12" (Glasgow Underground)
Mateo & Matos - "Full Circuit" EP (United Underground)
Mateo & Matos - "Frontiers" EP (Large)
Nice bit of jazzy rhodes fused with deep house rhythms.
