Album of the Week: Inexplicably hard-to-find in the U.S., this week's
featured album is Hal Willner's WHOOPS, I'M AN INDIAN. Producer Willner
has been responsible for some truly inspired pairings of musicians
over the years, both via his tribute albums (Nina Rota, Kurt Weill,
Charles Mingus, etc.) and via the sadly short-lived TV series "Night
Music." Now, after over 20 years in the biz, Willner treats us with his
first "solo" album, courtesy of Howie B's Pussyfoot label. It's a crazy
quilt of samples, from Jack Webb movies to Spike Jones to the Russian
Cossack Choir, blended together by Hal and his producer Martin Brumbach,
along with Mocean Worker adding the beats. Dense yet still fun, WHOOPS...
is an album that rewards repeated listening.
