Hello all

Time for me to dissect this latest post just a little;

> Why does Lauren's success bother people so much? If you were dissing
Wyclef or Praz I could understand it.<

Her success doesn't bother me, just her music. The lyrics are OK, but
the music just doesn't grab me. By contrast, when I first heard 'ON &
ON' on the radio a couple years back, I was transfixed. Then I saw
her on MTV and promptly went apeshit. Then I got her album and was
mesmerized by her vibe. There ya go. BTW, I have yet to hear ANYTHING
by anyone in the Fugee camp that catches my ear. As long as I hear
lame shit like WE BE TRYING TO STAY ALIVE, I will steer clear.

> Many of stuff the people call jazz today (e.g. ninja tunes etc), is
simply rehashed music based on the creativity of musicians of real
genius. Even allowing for technology a lot these modern guys would
have been studio engineers back in the day.<

There's a LOT of stuff that comes out with the tag 'jazz' that just
ddoesn't make the grade, and even Ninja Tune hasn't been that
impressive across the board(Funki Porcini and Up Bustle & Out being a
couple of exceptions). You see, I'm extremely selective about music,
because I personalize it. I make it part of my everyday experience. I
can't be that casual about it. If I hear something bad on the P.A. at
work, it gets me down. Call it weird if you want, that's just me.

> At least Lauren writes songs with lyrics that are meaningful.<

Yes, the content of her message is a cut above the other shit out
there, I just wish the music measured up to it.

> I think we all need to check ourselves. Are we into music because
it's good, or because it's underground and makes us cool?<

I'm into music(and have been since I was 4, back in 1969; You do the
math...) because it moves me in many ways. I could care less if it
comes from the top of the charts or from the center of the earth.
Commercial success doesn't make music worse, and underground status
doesn't make it better. I would never go with an underground scene
because I thought it made me cool. I could absolutely care less about
the image part of it. I don't exactly fit the underground image(if you
saw me, you'd know :)), but that doesn't affect the music I listen to.
I'm a big fan of jazzy drum'n'bass(check out HUD DOYLE by Tim Hagans),
but not because someone said it was the in thing. Plenty of people
will tell you it's not. Who cares?

>No more lauren dissing, let's stick to talking about the music we
love. IT'S ABOUT MUSIC AND NOT PERSONALITIES.<

My original point had nothing to do with her personality, or being A
personality.

Also, I certainly didn't want to raise any issues of race, which are
completely irrelevant to my original point, or any other point I might
make. My best friend and his wife, who happen to be black, don't like
Lauryn's record either, and I'm sure that race wasn't an issue with
them.

> I love Badu's music but I'm not to keen on her, I hate Will Smith's
music but I like his films.
> What???

Good Question...
