I think the Lauryn Hill album was quite a nice effort for a first
solo-album. I remember I heard it the first time in the Fat Beats store in
Amsterdam where the album had just come in and the dj was spinning it at max
volume, having almost tears in his eyes and saying: "this woman has soul
man..." ok not all the tracks are strong and this guy usually exaggerates
but I'm hearing a lot of potential here.. so let's wait for her next
album...there's enough other stuff to rant over, for example......
I'm now listening to a Ubiquity album by Derf Reklaw - From the Nile, for me
this is real nice stuff..a lot of percussion, horns, bass, flutes and
piano.... those of you who like The Pharaohs (of which he is a member), will
definitely dig this. even a Coltrane cover of Olé (on flute!) and Carnival
by Eddie Harris on it. shit! this is nice! jazz, soul, funk, reggae & poetry
on 1 album...
another buy today was a live album by Ahmad Jamal (1958!) - at the pershing
lounge, Chicago "the ponciana album" (Chess records). pure classic
jazz....paino (Ahmad)/drums/bass... which is more than just okay for me
sometimes..the background noise of the lounge is a little loud.. includes a
nice cover of Dizzy Gillespie's Woody 'n You..
anybody saw that wicked documentary on Femi Kuti on BBC last week? ah the
way his band was jamming in his house! unfortunately forgot to tape it as I
just stumbled over it...I hope he will bring out some new material soon.. I
saw an album of Toure Kunda in a 2ndhand store from 85. Anybody knows if
this is okay? there aren't any listening facilities and I still haven't
found a fisher price table..
I will be in Italy for work next month, close to a place called
Bolzana..anyone knows any good stores or clubs there? I fear that I will be
stuck in the Italian Alps for a month with only the sound of cowbells and
grazing cows in the background...oh well... back to nature I guess..
oh and it means that I will be missing out on The Roots concert in
Nighttown, Rotterdam, Holland on 17.04.99..pass it around...and even
worse... the recording of the cd I was going to do with my Brazilian band in
April....I'm thinking of doing the 34 hour traintrip (come&go) to make
it.anyway...all that practicing can't be for nothing..
ciao,
