Actually radio in So California is (generally speaking) no different from
the rest of the USA, in that American radio is all a bunch of segregated,
market demographic-driven formats owned by one of six corporate entities.

In addition to KCRW, you might also want to check out KPFK (90.7) on
Thursday nights ("Spectrum" featuring literally the full spectrum of black
music, from African music to Delta Blues to Motown to Funk to Jazz to
Hip-Hop to Drum N Bass) and Wednesday nights ("All At One Point" - mainly
rare groove and underground hip-hop). We even had this cool pirate station
(KBLT) that, though short-lived, had a long and storied history. It got its
plug pulled last year.
