To all musicians interested in putting together a compilation from the
list...here's what I've got in mind to do this. This is a lengthy post, but
if you're interested please take the time to read it and respond with your
thoughts...
Here's my story:
I was involved in one of the last "AJ List Compilation" projects, and I went
through the ups and downs and eventual state of being bummed that the
project didn't fly. At one point we had all the bands, artwork, some
connections for distribution, and even some potential investment, but the
thing didn't fly.
I want to try it again, but in a way that we can all share equally in the
effort and profit with minimal investment of time & money.
Here's what I think we should get started:
In a nutshell, each each individual artist that's interested should get a
site on MP3.com and then I can orchestrate a compilation and promotions from
within the site (because I work here).
Here are some details.
MP3.com will (for free) host a site for you, where you can upload songs,
graphics, and text info from your project, then when visitors want to buy
your stuff, we press orders "on demand" and distribute CDs for you, then
give artists 50% of the profit. The legal contract is non-exclusive and
non-binding, and it's a very high profile site (currently 300,000+ front
page visits daily).
The way we could work it is have an individual page for each artist, then
"cross-link" the sites to create a compilation feel, and market the songs as
a comp. For an example of where somebody did this, check out "The Columbine
High" project at
http://www.mp3.com/artists/20/columbine_high_school_tribute_album.html
OK, let me know what y'all think
