Bossa nova is brazilian music, the most classic example is of course "Girl
from Ipanema"; it's a fusion of portuguese, indigenous south american ,
african, and American styles. It was a hot item in the late 50's - early
60's in the US, and there is a huge volume of American music that came out
at that time that was flipping that style - a lot of jazz/lounge records -
most notable probably Stan Getz, A.c. Jobim, Quincy Jones, Gene Ammons,
Cannonball Adderly, Astrud Gilberto....
The music has had many resurgences since, just look at the soundtrack for
Austin Powers and you will see a song from Quincy Jones's Bossa Nova record.
