Ha! I can sing "A Garota da Ipanema" end to end in Portugues. ;)
interesting (probably off topic but informative) tidbit: I've been told
by an ethnomusicologist specializing in Brazil (and married to my old
portuguese prof :) that bossa nova's development had a lot to do with
economics. As the middle class burgeoned in the 50s and 60s and moved
out of slums (favelas) and into big apartment buildings, samba
(brazil's national music, and carnaval staple) was too loud and noisy
to play in such close quarters. So the music got pared down, paired
with jazz, and out popped bossa nova, the 'new thing'.
I don't know how historically accurate or comprehensive this little
anecdote is, but it makes a good story.
obaj question...and let me introduce myself for real. it seems that in
the last few months whenever I am looking for dirt on interesting music
I've come across, a web search reveals that this list has the
information and insight I seek. I feed off a lot of musical traditions,
have spun jungle and techno in the past, and am always looking for
something challenging and yummy.
Having been burned by the specificity of falling in lust with, then
exclusively spinning, dnb, I am going back to my roots, looking for
GOOD MUSIC, not categories. Sounds cliched, but y'know what I mean. To
me the term "acid jazz", as it were, functions more like an umbrella
for good, thick, soulful, diverse, laid back, beat-based music, then a
hard-cast genre itself. I find that sort of open interpretation very
attractive. That's why I'm here.
So, allow me to contradict everything I just said by asking, does the
"acid jazz" term have a date of origin? Does it have an introductory
anthem? I get the feeling that once the term was in use, a lot of old
music was back-dated into the description. I have some homework to do,
so please forgive me if this question is redundant for a lot of you.
