Yes, and no--50/50. Yes, they have been a great influence, but, more as
there fact of being in America. I was watching a documentary on Dvorak,
who said after leaving the US from his 'New World Symphony' tour, that the
'Negro' music was something that needed to be paid much more attention, and
that he saw the future of American music there.
And no-also, Jazz especially, was a fusion of all folk music that came
together here. With out many of the instruments from Europe (violin,
clarine->saxhorn->saxaphone, trumpet and other brass) it would sound much
different. And, like the strange time signatures in such thing as Dave
Brubeck go back more to the crazy Folk tunes of the Slavs, than the
polyrhythms of Africa--which were distant memories to many of those now in
America.
But, it created problems--just watched a bit VH-1's 'Behind the Music' on
Sting and the contriversy over him fronting a 'black' band, and the wrath
they got from both the 'White' and 'Black' communities (come on he had
Brandford Marsalis in his band!)

erik g

despite its problems still thankful to be an American
