ne1 watch the hiphop years on c4 tonight? the guy in the tone loc video
scratching on a deck/mixer unit slung round his neck like a guitar! how
fucking cool is that?! i want one.. now.
anyway, a few new tunes in the box:
MONGOBONIX - "MAS-PITO" - SUBLIMINAL
essential jazz/house fusion. 4:4 house beats with a funked up bass loop as
used on dj q's "we are here" and kulay's "burn". a scorching sax solo (which
sounds very much like the guy from groove connection) builds the pressure
through the last two thirds of the track.
ARMIN VAN BUUREN - "GIMMICK-FREE" - UNITED
4 worthy mixes on the filtered disco tip. olav basoski's mix is a frenzied
mash of stuttering cut-loops and filters, while the gim mix is less busy and
uses some nice sax riffs round the hazin and phazin disco loops and
uplifting vocal cuts.
ALL BLUE / MAW MIXES - "PRISONER" - WEA
maw apply their magic turning out a deep retro-disco number. shimmering jazz
guitar licks and a deep bassline bubble under a simple 4/4 drum pattern.
nice bit of sax in there too. if the loved up vocals are too sweet for you,
there's always the dub. pure class for those sleepy late night vibes. but
avoid the ruff driverz mix at all costs.
V/A - "LOFT CLASSICS VOL 13"
one of those bootleg's that irritatingly don't credit the artists' names.
anyway, southern freez is one of those rare classics that simultaneously
make your spine tingle and your ass wiggle. my girlfriend's dad (who's
turning out to be quite a trainspotter) say's this was used in a nightclub
scene in cagney & lacey! so if you can imagine that, you've probably got the
vibe.
DUBTRIBE SOUND SYSTEM "EQUITOREAL" - JIVE
that bass heavy tribal monster that has been getting a great reaction from
the dancefloor - chanting along and screaming through the breakdowns.
sunshine tells me that jc and fk have been playing at body & soul off cdr
for nearly a year. what can i add to that?
STUDIO NOVA - "THE MUSIC'S ALL I KNOW" - FIAT LUX
chunky french filter action with a pleasantly noodled up remix from jonny
fiasco and a rather bland mix from paul johnson.
SOULGRABBER & THE STICKMEN - "HEY BRYCE" - NRK
consisting of a single, one bar loop, mashed up and filtered in every way
possible, this is hardly the sort of thing you'd play at home. but played in
the right club at the right time, i've seen this inject shitloads of energy
into the dancefloor. you see it's the breakdown half-way through the track
that mashes the loop through a rising high-pass filter into an earbleeding
distorted howl before releasing the tension to a throbbing funk groove.
V/A - "10 YEARS OF STRICTLY RHYTHM"
some genuine classics for those that didn't get the 12's first time around.
my personal favourites are underground solution's sublime "luv dancin" and
river ocean's "love & happiness" featuring the ethereal voice of india.
