Article I. RE-INTRODUCTION
Hi, I'm Bob Davis and many of you know me as the web master of the P*Funk
Review and Classic Soul web sites. Some of you may have been wondering what
has been happening with the sites over the past few months. Here is what we
have been up to:

- My brother Mike and I purchased the data processing infrastructure
(Machines, Telecommunications Links, etc) to set up our own Internet Server
devoted to Black Music, Culture and History

- We have moved both the P*Funk Review, Classic Soul and created a new web
site for Jazz called Soul Patrol Jazz all under the Soul-Patrol.com domain.

- Because we own all of these data processing infrastructure, we have also
created some other Internet resources, namely the Soul Patrol Digest and the
SoulPowerSearch Black Music and Culture database

- Unlike some other so called "black sites", we are 100% BLACK OWNED and
OPERATED, we own ALL of the data processing infrastructure, ALL of the web
pages, telecomunications links, mailing lists, databases, etc

- This has put us in a position to do something that we feel is VERY
important, which is to support BLACK OWNED BUSNESSES here on the internet.
We ask that YOU do the same by visiting the web sites of our sponsors!

Section 5.01 Main Ingredient/Soul Sisters -by Karl
I will always wonder how far this group would have went if the original
line-up had remained intact. "Spinning Around" was a lush beautiful ballad
about falling in love. You've been my Inspiration was another gem with
flawless harmonies and orchestrations. I also love the sessions with Cuba,
the album as I recall the he excelled on had to be released in the seventies
while I was in the Air Force we used to play "Euphrates River" which
contained a number of songs including Happiness is Just around the bend. One
of the differences in music today is how old school writers (Smokey, Norman
Whitfeld, H-D-H,) and producers (Leonard Chess, Gamble-Huff) consistently
celebrated the black woman in the material they created for their artists.
This sadly has become the exception instead of the rule. I just can't get
off on this entire bitch-hoe ($$$$$$) train of thought that permeates the
radio/video airwaves. I have achieved a modicum of success in my lifetime
because of my mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who all loved and
cared for me and instilled certain values and concepts from family, church,
and life lessons that are as true today as they were when I first heard
them. You know Marvin sang "Save the Children" and I am beside myself that
we haven't done such a great job. To all you unique black female soul
patrollers, wives, mothers, sisters, auntie's, cousins, or what have you,
know that I love & respect you and celebrate your opinions, work ethic, and
contributions to our culture and society. I just wish that our music
reflected it more. Hell I didn't mean to go on a tangent, its just that I
had to say it, the feeling hit me if you know what I mean. I have spoke on
this before, but I wonder how many of the brothers out there would admit
that our love for our music is directly related to our love for black women.
I ain't ashamed to tell you that I didn't know how to rap, mack, play, or
anything else in order to get a date and maybe buy a slider or two (or
twenty) after the movie until I listened real close to the Tempts and Dells
and Smokey and Marvin, and the more I borrowed the better I became socially
and mentally because the music had me focused on caring, sharing loving and
respecting. It was never about playing a bitch, or coping a hoe. Ok I'm
AUDI, but I'll be back when the feeling hits again.............

Section 5.02 Rock n' Roll - by Sonia
I am an African-American who plays guitar for a rock and roll band. We are
of a multi-cultural background hailing from all corners of the globe.
(Puerto Rico/Jamaica/Pakistan/Taiwan/Italy/Germany) There is an obvious
conspiracy against the promotion of rock music played by African-Americans.
If it became public knowledge that rock music was derived from rhythm and
blues (where the acronym R&B comes from) which was ALSO created by the
oppressed peoples of African descent in this country) there would have to be
a definite acknowledgement of of the blatant culture theft that has been
committed by the status quo.
that has refused to give credit where credit is due or at least pay homage
to ALL the people from around the globe who have created and/or brought
their creations to share in this country to make it a potentially beautiful
place with a lot of work to do and seemingly little time to do it in.

Section 5.04 Black Culture, Thievery and More - by Pop E. B.
I honestly don't know what it would take for you to see how racist the
entertainment industry is. You have the internet. You have had the chance to
learn about the experiences of tens of thousands of Black people all over
the world who have struggled to work in the arts in this century alone. You
have spent months reading the posts on this African American owned and
operated mailing list that dozens and dozens of African Americans have
written to. You have heard the anger in our voices. You have heard the
frustration. And you have been given enough examples. I know you are not
blind because you can see well enough to attempt to revise for your comfort
the history of Africans in the Americas. There is SO much I would like to
say to you but this is not the place and the time. And since I am trying
EXTRA HARD to follow the rules of the list out of respect for Bob and his
work I will only address one thing you wrote in your last post:-)

You wrote:
<<<If you're going to get proprietorial about black culture and accuse
people of stealing from it, you then need to define what exactly it is. It
started, in America, with the drums played on Sundays by the slaves in Congo
Square in New Orleans. But for how long did it remain truly, purely
black?>>>

I honestly dont know WHAT history books you got that from matey but if you
need an accurate definition I believe you will have to start with the
holocaust of chattel slavery and the rape of the African continent. Not
Virginia. Not New Orleans. Not Plymouth Rock. Africa. You see Simon, the
real reason why you scratch your head about the Dells, for example, is
because you live in a place where there has never been a slow draggin and
grindin on the dance floor culture.
Slow draggin and grindin and grabbin and bustin a slob and sometimes bustin
something else in public on the dance floor to the music of the Dells and
Blue Magic and the Moments and Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes and the OJays
and New Birth and the Friends of Distinction and the Stylistics and Billy
Paul and Isaac Hayes and thousands of others is something you have never
experienced physically in the place of origin and with the people who
created it. This is why you do not know. This one phenomenon as well a
millions of others that continue to exist is a part of the Black Experience.
And since you are still alive and have an opportunity to get at least a
taste of this in your lifetime I truly hope that you will take that RISK.
Because if you are a middle aged white British male who is not a part of the
establishment as you say you are, then you may STILL have the time to grow
up and be like Brian Eno one day. He was asked by a Wired magazine
journalist a while back what he hoped for the future. The answer he gave is
way too long to quote here but a part of what he said was this:

<<< Do you know what I hate about computers? The problem with computers is
that there is not enough Africa in them. This is why I cannot use them for
very long. Do you know what a nerd is? A nerd is a human being without
enough Africa in him or her.>>>

Here's to wishing Liberation Day for you, and your computer Simon.
Cause massa day is done.
