I don't have these records in front of me, so please
excuse minor spelling/wording mistakes. these are
some recent favorites:
Om Lounge 1 & 2
----------------
Yum! All styles represented. a smooth collection that
ranges from funky and housy to kinda weird. my
impression is that 2 is a little more abstract than 1.
Frederick Galliano-Espaces Baroques (sp?)
-----------------------------------------
very nice classicish jazz...maybe somewhere between
eric dolphy and herbie mann? that might be a clumsy
comparison, but it's somber jazz with gauzey drum loop
washes over top. sounds like a lot of variations on a
theme upon 2nd and 3rd listen. lots of different
tempos make this very musical pick compatible with a
range of dance genres. kind of like cinematic
orchestra but 3 feet closer to earth.
Oh yeah, cinematic orchestra-ode to the deep sea!
-------------------------------------------------
I didn't buy the full length but this single is very
satisfying! lush lush lush moody jazz orchestrations
sounds of the city - London (gilles peterson)
--------------------------------------------------
Right. Like I need to say more. Pfft. purchase on
sight.
Nitin sawhney- beyond skin
---------------------------
whoah. had to take a step back to take this one in.
the liner notes nearly broke me in half, talking about
mixed up cultural identities and nuclear testing. the
album is just as touching: deeply sensitive and sweet
indian influenced stuff. spans a bunch of styles (incl
hip hop and r&b, and traditional indian styles) in a
fresh way that some people could find annoying but it
works for me. after half a listen, favorite tracks are
"Nadia" a breathtaking d&b vocal flight which could
save your life if you've just had a bad pill or gotten
dumped or something. the track before whose name I
can't remember is also jungle-compliant, more of that
orchestrated jazz stuff.
Buy on sight. Even you, elson.
J Majik - slow motion
---------------------
I'm stuck in a time warp lately, can't seem to stop
buying records made in 1997. this is another. don't
pass it up just because J looks like a memeber of A-Ha
on the cover. typical(ly lovely) sparse, technical,
sinister d&b with break beats, not rock beats. His
stuff is in the same family as photek. also at least
one downtempo track. actually i think there are a few.
ok, now some floor fillers
mc gq - emcee 001
-----------------
um, duh, I don't know the title of this, but it's the
first release from MC GQ's new emcee label. one side
is dull, i forget why, I think it's jsut average
jungle darkness, but the other side is like musical s
and m. ((*#&(&$@, oh my, dark dark dark, this shit
will tear your head off with tornado beats, a big
distorted synth line that sounds like it's coming to
eat you, and a breakdown that will make your knees
buckle.
global thang 3, 4, and 5
------------------------
no titles on these. I skipped 1 & 2, but all of these
are solid picks, marked by snappy, busy beats and
infectious basslines.
i guess that's it for now.
