Yeah! And he uses the same sampler I use (Ensoniq ASR-10)... :)
Depends on what you want to do; the ASR has a sequencer that you can make little
sequences and just hit
"play" (and the ASR is cool that you can hit the "play" button in time with the
music and it'll just stutter the first beat; the MPC-series samplers can't do
that...on the other hand, an MPC is smaller (roughly the size of a turntable,
and the ASR-10 is an extremely heavy (44lbs!) keyboard...they also make a
tabletop sampler called the ASR-X Pro which is much lighter...). Or you can just
make up a loop and have it loop continuously be either holding the key down or
do it my way: wedge an audio cable in between the keys to hold a key down for
you. On the sampler, you can also assign the MOD wheel to control the pitch of
the loop, making it similar to the pitch control on the SL-1200 - that way you
can beat match both your records and samples.
I personally have tons of drumloops; I organize them according to BPM, so
they're easier to use. So I might have a disk full of 101 BPM loops, another
disk of 72 BPM loops, etc. Or I dedicate a directory according to BPM on my SCSI
Zip disk (Make sure you get a sampler with a SCSI port, so you can plug in an
extrenal hard drive or a zip drive...very much recommended).
As for putting it in a mixer, you either need an adaptor (the sampler uses 1/4"
instrument cables, not the RCA plugs used in a DJ mixer) or just plug in the
MIC inputs if your mixer has them. Careful with the levels, the ASR (and most
pro musical instruments) put out a great deal of sound, so set your levels carefully.
