I wasn't comparing Hunter and Medeski as far as musicianship goes. I
wouldn't, and I consider myself a fan of both. If I *had* to draw a
correlation, however, I'd say that Medeski does more guitar playing on his
instrument than Hunter does on his guitar. Charlie really has no choice,
though, because he is guitarist, keyboardist *and* bassist. I don't play an
instrument at all, so I really couldn't explain any further. :) Keep in mind
that Medeski is more than a B-3 player, but in a different sense that Hunter
is more than a guitar player...Medeski plays a variety of keyboards,
utilizing a variety of effects.
*Please* let me know what Reuben Wilson is doing now that is anything
remotely close to what Medeski is doing. *Please*. If I had to choose a B-3
player that Medeski reminds me of, it might be Larry Young...John Patton at
times (although not often). I'm not putting Medeski in Young's class by any
means, but they correspond just as Larry Goldings corresponds to more
traditional B-3 "groove" players.

Musicianship wise, I don't think Medeski goes anywhere near hunter... Hunter
is doing something original. He adapting the B-3 idiom to his instrument
and
creating his own type of groove. Medeski basically is repackaging old bag
stuff. Reuben Wilson is doing the exact same thing Medeski is now, but he's
barely getting any air play. (Actually, Reuben is using a bass player on
some of his albums, but we'll forget about that temporarily.) You are right
though, it is turning the new generation on to the classics, but still... a
bass player ???? I'm sorry, I play the B-3, and there isn't anything the
two of them do that I can't do with my right and left hand. And people are
so blown away because they haven't really seen the masters at work.
