Hello. To compliment today's hip hop education... here are some thoughts on
a few things in my bag lately.

Recloose- Spelunking [Planet E] Produced by Carl Craig, there are 4 tracks
on this. My favorite being the downtempo track. Dubby muted guitar strings,
atmospheric bass, and dope soulful male vocals. There is also really nice
housy track with some funky cymbal driven drums and samples.

The Quartet- Produced by Peshay. I don't know if this is just EP of stuff on
a new full length or whatever but keep an eye out for this stuff. I think i
read somewhere that musicians played live in the recording of some of these.
Dope organic jazz sound. Lots of experimental rhythms and thick bass!
Definitely taking jazz and drum and bass ... um ... taking *jazz* to the
next level.

Cinematic Orchestra - Ode to the Big Sea, Channel 1 Suite 12" [NinjaTune]-
More stuff in the live jazz vein. Organic beat experimentation. One track is
a moody trip-hop type piece with some horns and lovely vocal snippets with a
Hefner remix. The flip has a bossa type track. Very much centered on drums.

P'tah / Carries 12" [Ubiquity] More New Latinaires stuff from Ubiquity. Dope
sharp beats (love the cymbals!) with floating atmospheric basslines,
xylophones, flutes, and lovely chorus vocals. The flip is a Brazilian
number. Moody yet pretty backgrounds with maracas, wood blocks, congas and a
few tweaked out acid house sounds for good measure. This 12" is hot!

Abstrakt Funk Theory Compilation (presented by Ian O'Brian) - Sweet 3 record
pack with tracks and mixes from Jazzanova, Neon Fusion, Claud Young, Ian O'
Brian, Classien Collective to name a few. I haven't really gotten to check
it all out but i think it was the Classien Collective track that sounded
like 5 straight jazz CDs in a CD shuffler that was put in the microwave.
Other stuff on here is very chill though... sorry for the lameass review,
take a listen.

HomeGrown - Endangered Species [?] R+B style vocals over top of electronic
spacebass type beats. Deep and soulful. Not really into the title track but
the flip is the bomb. Is this a new label? anyone know any info about this
track/label/etc.?

Dj Vadim- Life on the other Side [NinjaTune] As mentioned b4. Recommended!

Cookin' Good EPs Vol 1+2 [cookingood] Vol 1 has an atmospheric trip hop
track, a fat and funky herbie hancock thrust type jammy, and a more uptempo
jazz track that smokes. Vol.2 , all 4 tracks are deep spacy triphop tracks.
Both must haves... can't wait for the next one.

Santessa - P....(?) There are two of these out, one yellow one green. The
yellow has a house track that's mediocre but the flip is rockin. Sweet warm
female vocals. Anyone know more about her? The green one is a Kutmaster Kurt
remix that's all dark and spacy with Kool Kieth raps...

Turntables on the Hudson CD Vol. 1: A heady mix of eclectic, tribal, cosmic
spacefunk. Downtempo tracks as well as dancey ones. Hard to pick a standout,
but one of my personal favs on this is Neutrino "I think both understood"
Really sweet track i'd like more info on. Now i *really* have a reason to
kick myself for not making it out to the night, this is a great CD... Hey
Nat/Nick, how long do you think this outdoor party will last into the cold
weather?

more later...peace all,
aRgo
