Like Rick Martinez said the Talkin' Loud party rocked! Rob Gallagher
also did loads of party rockin' on the mic especially around MJ Coles
2-step set.
My highlights were:
The King Street/Night Grooves party before my energy level hit the wall
(travelled from Toronto that day) about 10 minutes before I hear that
Lolleata Holloway ripped it.
The Sunset Soiree at the beautiful Raleigh Hotel pool particularly
Gilles Peterson, Norman Jay and Ron Trent who was outstanding wherever
he played through the week. The Nervous party was a lovely follow up with
Louis Vega on decks and then the Basement Boys/Tony Humphries bash at
Bar Room.
At Ibadan party had Tony Allen playing. Anyone seen him use the effects
unit that uses a sensor that reacts to the distance and movement of his
hand hovering just over it? Very deep freeform jazz with African
effects.
The MAW party of course was the biggie... MAW, Jazzy Jeff, David Morales
thankfully adjusted to the vibe and even dropped one of my faves from
last year; the K.O.T. remix of U.F.O's Flying Saucer. The live show
featured a duet with Jody Watley and Roy Ayers, unfortunately due to
sound problems he could'nt use his vibes but quickly switched to keys
which emulated vibes. Also Stephanie Mills, Jocelyn Brown, Wunmi (who
did a great version of 'Upside Down' accompanied by three
percussionists), Kenny Lattimore and Bebe Winans backed by the Nuyorican
Soul band
...jaw dropping! To Paul Craven from One The One for the hookup; like
Bebe sang ....'thank you for being a friend'
Another killer was Salome De Bahia at the Wave Music party for Bossa
Mundo. She did four tracks including cuts from the record, Mas Que Nada
and that amazing version of Stevie Wonder's Another Star... eveyone went
nuts! Francois K 's set kept me at the party till the lights went on
despite the urgent need to change out of my sweat drenched shirt and
regroup for the Talkin' Loud party which completes this loop - err... I
did take a fresh before the TL party ;-) .
Drink prices were outrageous... no shortage of good scotch and beer
though. We'll have great close up shots of the action available soon at
welcome.to/hotstepper our seemingly permanent temporary site.
I had heared that the Ovum party was great especially Pete Moss. King
Britt talked to me about the new Sylk 130 project with 80's acts like
ABC, Allison Moyet etc. Jephte Gulliaume gave me his new track it's was
back to event promotion madness back home so I haven't been able to
check it yet. Also heared that Godfather rocked like nobodys business.
Out 4 now....
Carlos
