This is not necessarily related to Acid Jazz, but I believe it should be
of interest to a few of us - for me now and maybe others in the future.
The minefield of your artist name.
Have any of the artists on the list had any experience in dealing with
another artist using the same name?
Obviously, 2 artists using the same name is detrimental to both, so how
do you sort out who gets to keep it?
Is it who had it first? Or who's the more popular artist? Or who can
force the other to back down with threats of expensive legal actions?
The situation I'm in at the moment involves 2 artists - both in the same
City - one started using the name 'Pharmacy' in December 1999, the other
in May '99. The first is going the traditional band route - he's got a
manager, plans to release an EP, and will probably tour to promote it.
The other is going the 'hi-tech' way, is not signed to a label, has mp3
files available for download at numerous sites like mp3.com, 2 albums
available on the Net only, is getting airplay on internet radio
stations, is sending out demos and stuff world-wide (through contacts
made on the Net), and has no desire or intentions to play live. Both
are at similar stages of development.
Any comments would greatly appreciated.
Marc.
