yeah....now we're really onto something... gilles is the man.. his djing
takes a little getting used to, in that sometimes he doesn't even try to
match beats or come up with anything terribly ingenuous...instead, he's
djing for the art of song selection, which, quite honestly, not many people
are in the position to do with the same skill and knowledge that gilles has.
as for cds, some to look out for are DEFINITELY the INCredible comp -- he
really combines both forms of djing at times...which is to say the songs are
carefully selected from a wide background AND there are super-nice mixes
going on...i hate to say it, though, but i'm pretty sure most of it is done
digitally...ah well.....as for other things, i've got one he released on
brownswood japan from the stellar phonophile series that came out last year
(other discs were mixed by jazzanova and two of the members of UFO) -- this
one's really jazzy, which not much mixing at all...the blend of tracks is
wonderful, however, and it sets the tone for most any setting.....in fact,
this was the background music for most of my evening on new year's
2000....also, look out for the desert island mix that he released in 1997
with norman jay. this one sounds like it'd be WELL up your alley, as most
of the tracks are selected with a more clubby bent -- it's primarily soul,
funk, disco...generally garage-ish type stuff.....the standout cut is letta
mbulu 'what's wrong with groovin.' also of note...for the jazz heads (like
myself...)...it's got two version of love supreme...well worth checking.
and as a matter of fact, it was just re-released in the UK (this fucking
thing was impossible to find for a while) and can be bought at amazon.co.uk
for 7.99 pounds...maybe less, actually...
if anyone's interested in trading minidiscs of gilles-related material, i've
got quite a bit of it, including about half an hour of a phat live show in
new york this past march....it includes the HOT new remix of 'naima' (john
coltrane) by 4 hero...
best.
