When I first heard Giles DJ, it was one of the 'Essential' mixes for Pete
Tong's radio 1 dance show. What I found amazing was it was the first time
I'd heard a DJ playing such an eclectic mix of non- mainstream music and
not just thinking that you have to play house to a house crowd, and reggae
to a reggae crowd, or otherwise just a mix of popular chart music. In that
mix was stuff like Portishead, Kurt Cobain, Frank Zappa, Rotary Connection,
Shirley Bassey, Palm Skin Productions, Money Mark, Sun Ra all kinds of shit
- the thing about it is they weren't just thrown in the mix one after
another, it sounded like quite a lot of thought had gone into the order and
the mix was pretty damn seamless. He didn't need to beat mix on that
selection but he must be able to do it by now.
It's still one of my favourite mix tapes, the UFO set that followed wasn't
bad either. If it those shows are archived you should definitely check it
out, don't know what year it was maybe 94' UFO played their version of
'Stolen Moments'.

I must say that i'm very grateful to him, cos it was Gilles Peterson who
got me into the right kind of muzik. About 6 years ago or so a friend of
mine gave me a tape. It was a mix by Gilles Peterson and Patric Forge
recorded from some pirate Finnish radiostation somewhere between Sankt
Petersburg and Russian-Finnish border. The mix really killed me. What's
this muzik called? - i asked. Well, they call it acid jazz - the answer
was. This tape really changed my view on popular music, and i just want to
thank Mr.Gilles Peterson for it.
