English & African-American Studies at The University of Alabama
Brief Bio on Sun:
Born in Buffalo, New York, Sun began writing and performing poetry through
the medium of Hip-Hop at the age of 7. He later relocated to Chicago as a
teenager, where he began performing as a poet in the City's coffeehouse and
Underground Hip-Hop and Jazz/Poetry café scenes. Since arriving in
Birmingham approximately 2-1/2 years ago, Sun has performed in, competed in,
and hosted a variety of venues across the State of Alabama and Atlanta. He
is currently the host of URBAN GROOVZ, a monthly, eclectic, Afro-bohemian
spoken word and music experience at 22nd Street Jazz Café in Downtown
Birmingham. Sun recently added author to his growing list of titles with the
publication of his first book of poetry, "Full Mental Jacket" (c. 1999). In
addition to writing and performing his poetry, Sun is heavily involved in
promoting the arts in Central Alabama, while serving as the Chairman of the
Board for Synthesis, Inc., a non-profit organization, dedicated to fostering
creativity in under-represented communities.
Brief Bio on Tony:
Born and raised in San Francisco/Oakland Bay Area, Tony later spent his
young adult life in New Orleans. Tony has earned a BA in English from
Dillard University, an MA in Afro-American Studies from the University of
Iowa and a PhD from Louisiana State University with a Dissertation on
African-American poetry and the history of Black song and folklore. Tony has
had his works published in "Obsidian," a literary journal, and "Word Up:
Black Poets of the 80s from the Deep South," an anthology of poetry edited
by Kalamu ya Salaam. Tony's performances are a blend of several genre's
including poetry, autobiography, fiction, drama and folklore.
