Well, I get a discount for being me at my record store [ok, so it may be
more related to the fact that I've spent 30-40 pounds a week for 4 years at
their store, but I'd like to think it was just because I'm me ;-)]. Does
that mean I can't contribute to this discussion?
Illegal copying has been going on for years; bootlegs, taping tunes off the
radio or off friends, doing the same with minidisc, burning cd copies, and
now mp3. Most people will have done it. It doesn't bother me that much,
because personally, I'm a vinyl junkie, and if I like something, I want to
own it on vinyl. So I'm the kind of person that record companies would want
to be listening to mp3s on the net, 'cos it will end up with me buying yet
more records.
I think the worry is with people who wouldn't do that. And whilst ripping
of the evil majors seems like a good thing, a small amount of that money
does eventually end up with the artist. So, until there's a system and
culture in place of buying direct off the web site of the artist, so that
they receive all the money, the record companies do still have a role to
play. Saying that, the small labels are always going to be a good way of
getting your music noticed.
