I've listened and I like it (especially the "Jeffe 2000" it's got that down
home harmonica nasty vibe to it), but I don't think it's more adventurous
unless more adventurous means to "modernize" things with samples and stuff
like that. I think all three of their records are great.
I read the quote on their website about this record being more
“adventurous.” Everybody’s different but if I wanted adventure I’d go jump
out an airplane or drive real fast in my car. It’s sort of weird to me how
music has become this thing about new, adventurous, avant-garde or whatever.
The greatest music of all time, the music that will be remembered till the
end of time was created by people who were reflecting slices of life from
cultures born from the necessities of survival. This means cultures rooted
in the natural environment around them. Nobody was sitting around thinking “
I’m bored! I think I’ll create some “New” and “Adventurous” music today.”
The greatest jazz, blues and soul players of all time weren’t “adventurous,”
they were THEMSELVES (which in today’s cut and paste world maybe an
adventure in itself). They were people first, players second.
When I hear the terms “new,” “adventurous,” or “modern” used in music, I
think of mountain climbers scaling Mount Everest so they can stick a flag in
the top and say, “look what I done.” I visualize running across a virgin
sand dune just to leave footprints, skipping a rock across a still pond just
to make a splash or carving some initials in a tree to let everybody know
you’ve been there. I think of people without roots, children born and weaned
in the pop culture (whether they know it or not).
In the end it’s my firm belief that roots do not lie in music. Roots lie
solely in the cultures and ways of life of “rooted” people. Music is just
the beautiful blossom of these cultural trees.
Maybe I should have just said I like Galactic’s new record…..
