Saw da lata last night at Joe's pub. The show was phenomenal. I was
actually expecting a little more 'beats' given what I've heard from their
recordings (and given the fact that I missed the Central Park show :()
but actually they were all live... a drummer, percussionist, guitarist,
bassist, keyboard, and singer with a lotta spunk (far better than Bebel
Gilberto IMHO)
They played all the songs offa their previous singles (pra manha, rain
song, ponteio) plus material from their new album (songs from the tin). It
was all super groovy brazilian jamz in the tradition of the tropicalismo
mixed with the funkyer, percussive side of things.
Mr. Forge was present but not DJing. I'm curious to see how he'll make out
tonite at Giant Step.
Too bad there wasnt more dancing space at Joes pub. I got sucked into a
couch and even caught a snooze during a quiet moment in one of the
songs. But maybe that was the whiskey talking. That place is just too
comfortable. I'm rambling now.
Also I had a chance to hear Luke Vibert dj on Saturday (a sorry
replacement for an over-packed Body & Soul show).... he played a highly
ecclectic set of technoey
grind-your-teeth-down-to-the-roots-oh-boy-this-acid-is-strong kinda
beats. Which I felt disappointed with, I would have expected a little more
of his fat and jazzy downtempo nastiness. Oh well. It musta been the jet
lag.
PS heard a friend spin a new Faze Action single - that blessed sound made
me stop my dancefloor bumping and reflect on just how beautiful the world
could be
