ALBUM OF THE WEEK: The musical legacy of Fela Kuti continues to grow with
yet another collection of obscure Afrobeat gems. Ocho Records, following up
their two excellent club-based compilations from Snowboy and the Future
World Funk Club DJ's, have tapped yet another club to curate a compilation.
The result is AFROBEAT: THE FUNKIEST MUSIC EVER MADE, presented by the DJ
posse from The Shrine, a London-based club named after Fela's legendary
Nigerian nightspot. Blending American pop, soul, and funk influences with
the more traditional African sounds, and bookended by the requisite cuts
from Afrobeat originators Fela and drummer Tony Allen, AFROBEAT is yet
another remarkable feat of musical archaeology.
