    Gordon,

If Elson's showing you around you'll get to go to the good
stuff. Otherwise, I highly recommend the SoCal Raves Calendar which is at
    http://www.socal-raves.org/calendar/
    It's really comprehensive.

In terms of record stores, the best place to shop is Melrose
Ave. Beatnonstop (which has an eclectic selection strong in house and
d'n'b) is almost right across the street from Wax Records (Doc Martin's
shop) which is the best House vinyl store in LA. A 5 minute walk East from
that area is DMC Records which is more of a Trance/Hip-Hop store.

If your travels take you farther South, you should stop at Higher Source
Records in Huntington Beach- spiritual home to the Seasons Records
imprint. It is by far the coolest store I've been in (cool saltwater tank.)

Finally, hyperreals "Rotator Locator" is decent too...

    Have fun in LA!
