It’s been a long time since a live performer has
touched me so deeply. I first heard Jill’s songs
played on GP’s "Worldwide" last march and had been
anxiously anticipating the release of the album. That,
in itself, blew me away. But to see her live was a
whole new experience.
The woman has a presence that just exudes positivity.
She was right with us, telling us personal
stories--about getting hurt by lovers, about finding
new love, about how her brothers should not forget
about her, and about how happy and grateful she is for
the many people who are embracing her album. She
brought me to tears (a few times)--she just filled me
up with all kinds of strong emotions--not only tears,
but laughter too. Jill truly performs her songs--we
got to see what her lyrics really meant to her when
she physically acted out her words. One of my favorite
moments was at the end of "Getting’ in the way." She
stepped away from the mic and played like she was
talking to this woman, starting shit with her, calling
her names, even getting ready to fight, taking off her
earrings (referring to the lyrics "but I’m about to
take my earrings off, give me some vaseline…"). It was
amazing.
Other highlights: the band, Fat Back Taffy, and her
back-up singers rocked. They were funky, soulful and
so tight, complimenting Jill perfectly. Her poem, "The
Thickness" was deep and lovely (about an over-sexed 14
year old girl with no self worth)--I hope she releases
this one on her next album. The audience was also
great, singing along with all her songs, giving Jill
constant encouragement, screaming out "you go girl"
and "that’s right Jill." And the overall set was
right on--a perfect selection.
If Jill Scott comes to your town, don’t hesitate to
go. She’s unbelievably incredible--a rare talent to
come around.

I'm wondering if anyone else on the list has seen her
live and what they thought?
