"Billie Jean" is widely remembered as the video that broke the color line on
MTV. At one time, out of 800 acts being showed on MTV, only 16 were black.
They used to defend their racist practices by saying that few black artists
recorded the kind of rock 'n roll that the channel's format required, but
how could they explain programming Phil Collins note-for-note cover version
of the Supremes "You Can't Hurry Love" when Motown acts were getting no
airplay.. MTV has certainly changed over the years, that's for sure.
